Start the written lesson

Before you start

  • A verified connection to a practice site.
  • Permission to manage theme settings.

Let’s do this, step by step.

Step 01

Inspect menus and locations

Ask the AI to list menus and the locations provided by the active theme.

A menu's name is different from the slot where it appears. Read both before changing the header navigation.

Step 02

Create or select a menu

Choose the existing menu or create a clearly named practice menu.

Use an existing menu only when you intend to change all places that use it. A separate practice menu is easier to test.

Step 03

Add real destinations

Add the intended page records and any reviewed custom links. Arrange labels and parent-child order.

Use real page IDs for internal destinations. Check that dropdown items have the right parent and that each label makes sense.

Step 04

Assign and render

Assign the menu to a verified theme location, or use the documented emcp_menu shortcode in a custom header.

Assigning a live header location affects visitors. For a custom header, the shortcode keeps navigation connected to the menu instead of copying static links.

Step 05

Test every link

Read back the menu tree, then test desktop, mobile, and keyboard navigation.

Check every destination and dropdown. A saved menu still needs to be usable in the theme or header that displays it.

You’re done when…

The intended menu appears in the right location and its links work.
