The practical difference

WordPress.com MCP is a hosted MCP server for WordPress.com sites and for self-hosted sites on a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan. EMCP runs on your own WordPress site and adds dedicated page builders, backups and optional Cloud services.

Start with your site

Which one fits your site?

The useful question is which setup fits the next piece of work you need to ship.

01 / Hosted

Choose WordPress.com MCP

Your site is on WordPress.com, or you already pay for Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete, and you want a hosted connection with no plugin to manage.

  • Manage WordPress.com sites from an AI client with OAuth sign-in.
  • Choose read-only or full access when you authorize.
  • Manage site editing, plugins and domains on WordPress.com.
Read the vendor documentation
02 / EMCP Tools

Keep or start with EMCP

Your site is self-hosted and you want page-builder tools and backups without a hosting or Jetpack plan.

  • Build with dedicated adapters for Elementor, Gutenberg and 12 standalone page builders.
  • Review recorded changes in History, and back up, restore or migrate whole sites with Pro.
  • Start with the Free plugin, then add Pro or a hosted Cloud connection when needed.
Install the Free plugin

EMCP Pro and EMCP Cloud are separate products. Builder and plugin features also depend on what is installed on your site. Hosted fleet automation, bulk enrollment and managed configuration currently have restricted pilot access.

Write safeguardsWordPress capability checks, per-tool switches, confirmation for destructive tools and a management access list for who can configure EMCP. [7]The agent must describe each write and send user_confirmed after asking you. Media, categories and tags are deleted permanently. [2]
Page buildingElementor (classic and atomic) and Gutenberg with five block packs, plus 12 standalone builder integrations. One standalone builder is active at a time; availability depends on the installed builder and edition. [8]Block editor content and site editing, including templates, menus and global styles. [2]
Product costFree plugin, optional EMCP Pro license and separate optional Cloud plans. Your AI provider and third-party plugin licenses are separate. [9]Included with WordPress.com paid plans; self-hosted sites need a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan. [1]

This is a documentation comparison, not a hands-on benchmark. Broad code or API access may support work beyond a dedicated tool. No tool-count score or unverified performance claim determines a winner.

Look a little closer

Differences to check before choosing.

Hosted connection or on-site plugin

WordPress.com runs the MCP server for you and connects to your site, so there is no plugin to install or update. EMCP runs on your own site, so you choose the connection method, enabled tools and where your data goes, and you can add a hosted Gateway later.

WordPress.com MCP documentation

Confirmation is a conversation, not a lock

WordPress.com requires the agent to describe a write and pass user_confirmed after asking you. That keeps you in the loop, but the server relies on the agent to have asked. EMCP uses WordPress capabilities, per-tool switches and explicit confirmation flags on destructive tools.

Make the comparison concrete

Try the same task on staging.

A small test tells you more than matching tool names or counting integrations.

Read
“List my five most recent pages with their status and last edited date. Do not change anything.”
Shows whether each product can read your site accurately, without writing.
Build
“Build a landing page for a cooking school’s autumn workshop: a hero with a booking button, three benefits, and an FAQ with three questions. Leave it as a draft.”
Shows how each product builds a page you can still edit in your builder.

Then check these on both

  1. 1Step 1

Check which plan each option needs for your site.

  2. 2Step 2

Connect read-only first and list what each one can see.

  3. 3Step 3

Make one small content change and confirm how each one asks before writing.

Use comparable permissions and installed plugin versions. Check the editor, rendered result and recovery behavior before making the same change on a live site.

Common questions

About EMCP vs WordPress.com MCP.

Can I use WordPress.com MCP on a self-hosted site?

Yes, if the site is connected with Jetpack and has a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan. EMCP needs no Jetpack or hosting plan. Read the source.

Can it change my domain settings?

Yes. Its domain tools can change live DNS records and nameservers, so the vendor warns that the effects reach beyond the site. EMCP does not manage domains. Read the source.

Do I need a WordPress.com account to use EMCP?

No. EMCP runs on your own WordPress site. An EMCP Cloud account is optional, for multi-site features. Read the source.
